hot rolled plate vs cold rolled plate

  • Production Process
  • Hot rolled steel plate is produced by heating steel above its recrystallization temperature (typically over 1700°F) and then rolling it to the desired thickness.
  • Cold rolled steel is initially hot rolled and then further processed at room temperature through additional rolling or drawing operations.
  • Surface Finish:
  • Hot rolled steel plate has a rougher surface with a bluish-gray mill scale.
  • Cold rolled steel has a smoother, more polished surface finish.
  • Dimensional Accuracy:
  • Hot rolled steel plate has wider tolerances for thickness and flatness.
  • Cold rolled steel offers tighter tolerances and more precise dimensions
  • Strength:
  • Hot rolled steel generally has lower yield and tensile strength due to its larger grain structure.
  • Cold rolled steel typically has higher strength due to work hardening during the cold rolling process.
  • Formability:
  • Hot rolled steel is often more formable and ductile.
  • Cold rolled steel can be less formable due to its increased hardness, though this can vary depending on the specific grade.
  • Internal Stresses:
  • Hot rolled steel has fewer internal stresses.
  • Cold rolled steel may have residual internal stresses from the cold working process.

Hot Rolled Steel Plate production process

HOT ROLLED STEEL PLATE PRODUCTION PROCESS
Step 1

Raw Material Preparation

  • The process begins with the selection of appropriate steel slabs.
  • These slabs are typically 6-10 inches thick, 20-80 inches wide, and up to 40 feet long.
Step2

Furnace Heating

  • The steel slabs are loaded into a reheating furnace.
  • They’re heated to temperatures above 2200°F (1200°C), which is above the steel’s recrystallization temperature.
  • This heating makes the steel malleable and easier to shape.
Step 3

Descaling

  • As the slab exits the furnace, it passes through a high-pressure water spray system.
  • This removes the initial layer of oxide scale that forms during heating.
Step 4

Roughing Mill

  • The heated slab enters the roughing mill, which consists of a series of rollers.
  • These rollers apply pressure to reduce the slab’s thickness and increase its length.
  • The slab may pass through the roughing mill multiple times.
Step 5

Finishing Mill

  • The steel then moves to the finishing mill for further thickness reduction.
  • This mill has a series of rollers that gradually reduce the steel to its final thickness.
  • The number of passes through the finishing mill depends on the desired final thickness.
Step6

Cooling

  • After rolling, the steel plate moves to a cooling bed.
  • Controlled cooling is crucial to achieve the desired mechanical properties.
  • Water sprays may be used for accelerated cooling if needed.
Step7

Leveling

  • The cooled plates pass through a leveler to ensure flatness.
  • This process helps meet the hot rolled steel plate flatness tolerance requirements.
Step 8

Cutting

  • The long steel plate is cut to the required lengths using shears or saws.
  • This stage determines the final hot rolled steel plate sizes.
Step 9

表面檢測

  • The plates are inspected for surface quality and potential hot rolled steel plate defects.
  • Any plates not meeting quality standards are set aside for rework or downgrading.
Step 10

Heat Treatment (Optional)

  • Some grades may undergo additional heat treatment to achieve specific mechanical properties.
  • This could include normalizing, quenching, or tempering.
Step 11

Surface Treatment (Optional)

  • Depending on the application, plates may undergo surface treatments like shot blasting or pickling.
  • Hot rolled steel plate pickled versions have improved surface quality.
Step 12

Testing

  • Samples are taken for mechanical testing and chemical analysis.
  • Tests may include tensile strength, yield strength, and impact resistance.

The final stages of hot rolled steel plate production involve marking and packaging, where plates are labeled with crucial information such as grade, heat number, and dimensions before being stacked and prepared for shipping. Throughout the entire manufacturing process, rigorous quality control measures are implemented to ensure compliance with industry standards, including careful monitoring of hot rolled steel plate thickness tolerance and other critical specifications.

Hot rolling process enables the production of a diverse range of products, spanning from thin hot rolled steel sheets to thick plates. The specific parameters at each stage of production are fine-tuned based on the desired grade being manufactured, accommodating everything from standard A36 hot rolled steel plate to more specialized varieties like hot rolled alloy steel plate. This flexibility and attention to detail ensure that the final products meet the exact requirements of various industrial applications.
